Background of the Study

The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology into agriculture, often referred to as smart farming, is revolutionizing the sector by enabling real-time monitoring, data collection, and automation of processes. IoT solutions can help agribusiness firms optimize resource usage, enhance crop management, and increase yield (Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2023). However, in Kano State, agribusiness firms face significant challenges in adopting IoT solutions due to limited infrastructure, high implementation costs, and lack of technical expertise.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of IoT solutions to transform agriculture, many agribusiness firms in Kano State struggle with their implementation. Challenges such as inadequate internet connectivity, financial constraints, and resistance to technological change hinder the adoption process. This study aims to examine these challenges and provide insights into overcoming them.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the major challenges agribusiness firms in Kano State face in implementing IoT solutions.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these challenges on the adoption and effectiveness of IoT in agriculture.
  3. To propose strategies for mitigating these challenges and facilitating successful IoT implementation.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key challenges in implementing IoT solutions in agriculture for agribusiness firms in Kano State?
  2. How do these challenges impact the effectiveness of IoT adoption in agriculture?
  3. What strategies can be employed to overcome the challenges of implementing IoT solutions in agriculture?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The challenges of implementing IoT solutions do not significantly affect their adoption in agriculture.
  2. The challenges faced by agribusiness firms do not significantly impact the effectiveness of IoT solutions.
  3. Proposed strategies do not significantly mitigate the challenges of implementing IoT solutions in agriculture.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on agribusiness firms in Kano State and their efforts to implement IoT solutions for smart farming. Limitations may include restricted access to proprietary data and varying levels of IoT adoption among firms.

Definitions of Terms

IoT Solutions: Systems of interconnected devices and sensors that collect and transmit data for real-time decision-making.
Smart Farming: The use of advanced technologies, including IoT, to improve agricultural processes and outcomes.
